Guest Photos: Bikes in Norway

My friend E sent these photos taken just for us on her recent trip to Norway. She's currently living in Iceland. I'd love to see some Icelandic cycle chic, particularly in winter...

Anyway, we hope you all enjoy these photos.

I visited Reykjavik several years ago, and can't recall seeing a single bicycle in the week I was there. Maybe I missed something, but I'm not sure there's much chic cycling (or much of any cycling) in Iceland. Reykjavik certainly is a chic place though! And, I have many fond memories of Icelanders being helpful. Even the guards who chased me down for taking a tourist snapshot of the American embassy there were unfailingly polite.

Denmark, as most people know, is a totally different story - bicycles galore.

Thanks for the Scandi post. Kudos to you for getting the Norwegian ø. Beautiful shot of the sunlit autumn leaves. Such elegant bike shelters, like bird wings! They do invest in their bike infrastructure up there, don't they?

Hi Charlotte,

My favourite Icelandic Cyclist would have to be Aggatho!

I think she is visiting the USA at the moment but she is a genuine Chic Icelandic Cyclist.

Oh Sean, I think you were unlucky. E has texted me when she's seen lovely ladies out on their bikes. Hopefully we'll have photographic evidence soon!

There definitely are regular cyclists here, but this time of year it's much less frequent given the weather and the many hours of darkness. In the summer though, it's quite popular, and they've recently expanded some of the bike path network to accommodate the increase in traffic. There's even a whole month called "bike to work month" where companies compete for the most miles commuted in non-car ways (horses, foot, and rollerblades count too).

The attire is in general more focused on extreme weather protection and less on style but in the warmer months I'll see if I can grab some photos of the more chic commuters out there- they definitely exist!

Thank you so much for posting these photos. They definitely brightened my day! I lived in Oslo for about 6 months while studying abroad during undergrad, and miss it every day! Hopefully I'll be able to make it back before another 6 years go by...
