Bike Lane Wall
If you can't tell from the photo, the snow continues to just before the next intersection, where the bike lane area is plowed again. There's the snowy tree space all along this where, theoretically, the snow could go, if they were to plow it.
Is there a reason why they don't?

Happy day but no photos
Today I got to ride for the first time since the big snowfall last week. What a relief it was! I was in a much better mood all day and I honestly felt safer in the street - the plows and salt/sanding made the road surfaces much more consistent than the sidewalks and by avoiding rush hours I had no problem taking the lane when needed.
Beacon Street has a de facto bike lane. There's so much snow that the normal parking spaces are filled and the cars are parked in the travel lane, leaving a bike lane's worth of travel lane free and clear. It was perfect!
I can also confirm empirically that with my old metal pedals there is no problem wearing YakTrax while riding. Indeed in the few times I walked my bike for safety I was glad I didn't need to stop and put these on. They were there when I needed them and did not catch or snag on my pedals while I was riding.
My husband has the camera on a business trip, so I regret that we will continue to be light on photos here at Chic Cyclists, but I hope to soon be able to share images of some of the hardy souls I've been seeing out and about - and their extra-tough bikes!
Stay warm...

Somerville Illuminations Bicycle Tour
Join the Somerville Bicycle Committee on Saturday evening, Dec 18, to celebrate the coming of winter and year round cycling. We will enjoy a casual bike tour to see some of the city’s homes warmly lit for the holidays.
We will meet at the Somerville High School entrance at 6:50pm, departing promptly at 7:15 pm.
We will tour the city in coordination with the Somerville Arts Council’s Illuminations Holiday Tour. The start of our ride is scheduled halfway between two trolley departures, so we will not interfere with the trolley tour.
This is a winter evening ride, so please dress warmly and use bike lights. Holiday lights, costumes & festive cheer encouraged. Heavy rain, wind, snow or ice cancels bike tour.

He Likes It!
Dad's bike is a complete success, but I might actually be even happier than he is.
He's out riding it today, in this frigid weather, so I know he really likes it.

After the snow

Cyclists are happier in the road than they are on the sidewalk!

Except, of course, when rolling up to park.

Don't forget to send in your winter cycling chic photos for our contest!

Winter Storm In Effect

There is a winter storm warning in effect. The streets are nearly empty. My boss told me I could work from home today. I would have still ridden my bicycle in to work, as this man is, but I am concerned about the trip home. In the daylight I can see the ice, at night I need more light.
Good thing I have a plan for that!
Here's the plan: I have a dynamo front wheel being built. I have a front rack coming in the mail. Now all I need are headlights to run off the dynamo. My colleague showed me a copy of Bicycle Quarterly, which happened to have an article about modifying LEDs for use with a dynamo. Does anyone else have suggestions for me? I'd really like to have two round headlights, if that's even possible with a Sturmey-Archer dynohub. What shall I do?

The one that got away

It's hard to photograph cyclists when it gets dark so soon! She had a great hat, stylish coat, a beautiful bike, and pretty boutique shopping bags hanging from her handlebars as she headed home with her purchases. I think she's riding on the sidewalk because the road was particularly icy there, she later entered the street.
I wish I could have shown you.

Winter Light

First thing I noticed was the drape of her skirt against her dark leg, then the grey mittened hands she was trying to keep warm.
When I spoke with her she graciously let me take her picture and I can show you her cute shoes, purple tights, and the lightness of the skirt which somehow makes this cold weather less horrible.
This morning's temperature 27 degrees "Feels like 16 degrees", winds from WNW at 15 mph, gusting to 20 mph (-5 degrees C, winds 26 km/h).
