Gary Fisher City Bike

My colleague just visited to point out this bike. His wife is considering one. Isn't it lovely? It's nice that they come in large enough sizes, and the Nexus internal hub would be really great. The cycle chic side of me really likes the matching basket.

Has anyone taken a test ride? What did you think?

The have them up at Belmont Wheelworks Too if you're interested in checking one out for a testride. Not sure if they'd have all the sizes, but there are plenty of hills around there to try it on.

I think that's where my colleague's wife tried it out. It's a cute bike, no?

oh, definitely.

I just looked at their site, and they have it in these Sizes
MD (18.5") | LG (21") | XL (23.5")

nice for tall people (like me!)

Exactly, I have a 6'+ friend looking for a vintage bike and he's having a tough time. People are taller now, nice to see there are some options.

heh, this isn't really about the Gary Fisher anymore, but I'm constantly scouring ebay and craigslist for super tall bikes. I have a 27" framed Panasonic that I got at Bikes Not Bombs a year ago. Honestly it's the biggest bike I've ever seen, but it fits me wonderfully. And to make it even bigger and longer, I'm about to add an xtracycle to it!

That said, if your friend looks on craiglist, within a month he'll find something. I can't vouch for the quality!

Looks nice ! I'm thinking that the beautiful front
basket could have been a beautiful rear rack. Not
all of us like to ride around with our puppies.

Jon, I would have hoped you could buy both as matching add-ons. I know folks who swear that carrying groceries in front gives better handling over the same weight on the rear of the bike. I just got my front rack, I look forward to experimenting myself.

OK Geoff, that's REALLY tall!

I rode a three speed version. I'm 5' 6" and the M fit me fine. But I didn't love the coaster brakes. Plus I didn't like the way they "improved" on the European bikes they say were the model. The skimpy chain guard, or the slightly forward lean in the riding position.

You may have seen this already, but here's a fairly comprehensive review of the bike. It's from December 2008 so not so recent. Still I think it provides some useful information.

I have to say that is one of the bikes I am coveting. I am planning to buying one very nice bike when I turn 40 in three years ( I commented on Sarah's blog and thought it was 2 years. But no! 3!!!)

I am all mixed up between a Pashley, that gary fisher and a velebrios ( which I can't spell-but know of a shop that sells them in somerville) for the next three years I will be making comparison lists between them. and I bet as soon as I decided and buy- something crazy awesome will come out. although I am short so perhaps the Gary will not be for me if it works best for taller peeps?

so yeah- awesome bike. I think it comes in a light blue too?

Wow, it's so weird to see a comment from another "no-h" Jon...

If you do buy one of these, check to make sure it isn't one of the recalled models. Apparently, one production run had a problem with the fork-to-rack interface.

Oh, and if any tall forlks are looking for frames, I have a pile of 63 cm bikes and frames at my place. I usually strip them of parts to use on other bikes, or build up bombers for my 6'7" pal, Dave. So, I am willing to sell some cheap.

I love it! Could use a full chain guard though.

MamaVee,

Have a look at the Biria Classic Dutch (they had some at Quadcycle in Arlington Heights some months ago).

3-speed only, but I do get around Belmont on a 3-speed Raleigh (but I walk up Belmont Hill, and I did also swap the rear cog for the largest available).

Relieved to see there is still a model for us shorties, in the "women's" frame. ;-)

That rack looks like it could handle more than 10 kg, which is not a lot. But I guess heavier loads could go in the back.

Beautiful day here! Imagine it is the same in Boston?

Haven't ridden one, but there was one parked near my office regularly last summer and it had this amazing matte finish paint job. The proportions were really nice as an object- can't say whether they were functional geometry or just looked cool.

Well, this is classic! Loves it! :)

I second the chain guard comment. When are US bike manufacturers going to start offering quality chain guards (or even a full chain encasement)?
