My friend M shared this CNN story, about 84-year-old nurse Lan Yin Tsai who rides a singlespeed 150 miles for MS research. To top that, she does the ride in a dress and heels.
Incredible story. I did a MS 150 once many years ago and due to technical problems with my dad's recumbent, we ended up the last people to leave the start. We spent a good deal of time biking with a rail thin 60 year old asian guy who was on a 70's ten speed wearing loafers and chinos. The weather was awful and a lot of the riders with fancy bikes and gear ended up bailing and waiting for the sag wagon busses, but the asian guy finished the day! He wore a hefty bag with holes cut in it as his raingear. I've always wondered what his story was-he was definitely impressive.
Stories like this prove that it's not about gear, it's about attitude.

an inspiration to all of us, especially those of us who ride in these things, and think, maybe I'm getting too old to do this next year.
